Green Herons – July 14, 2016

Green Herons – July 14, 2016

Green Heron nest

Each year during July, I lead evening walks in West Newbury.  Last night’s walk was very exciting as members of the colony’s Graduating Class of 2016 were so active.

Adult Green Heron
Compared to most herons, the Green Heron is short and stocky.  Its relatively short legs and thick neck are often drawn tight against their bodies.  The wings are broad and rounded. The bill is long and dagger-like. The crown feathers [on the head] can be raised into a short crest.
